How You Know We’re Fucked #5 – The Didn’t-See-the-Movie Edition
Remember these things?
You thought I was kidding, didn’t you?
Yeah, well, so did I. Until now. As it turns out, there actually are companies called Sky Net and Cyberdyne. Seriously. The founders of these two companies must have been living in a shack in the Alabama swamps without electricity or telephone for the duration of the 1990s and didn’t pick up on our cultural paranoia concerning robots taking over the world, so they went and named their endeavors after the Things That Destroy The World in the Terminator films. Oh yeah, and guess what the companies do? One is a logistics company, the other builds robots. Seriously.
So while we were watching Terminator (and RoboCop and the Matrix and 2001: Space Odyssey) and getting all bugged out about how, in an beautiful and deserved twist of irony, the robots we create will use their superior logic and strength to destroy and/or enslave us, a couple of guys stayed at home laying the foundations for our own demise.
